In-wall and floor safes

In-wall and floor safes, built into the structure of your home

An in-wall or floor safe is built into the fabric of the building instead of standing in a room. That gives you two things an ordinary safe cannot.

A thief will not find it. A safe behind a picture or under a rug is not on the list of places to search. Most household break-ins are over in minutes, and what cannot be seen rarely gets found.

A thief cannot carry it away. A freestanding safe can be lifted out and forced open somewhere quiet. A safe set into the wall or floor stays where it is, which also makes it far harder to lever open.

Wall or floor?

Wall safes are the easier fit and suit most homes. They go in between studs or are set into masonry, then hidden behind a picture, a mirror or a panel. Check the depth of your wall before choosing, because the outer depth of the safe has to fit inside the structure.

Floor safes are cast into a concrete slab and are the more discreet option. A safe in the floor is also harder to lever, because a thief cannot get a working angle on it.

How much protection do you need?

The range runs from simple hidden safes to grade I safes certified to EN 1143-1, and the difference is real. A certified safe has been attacked with tools by an accredited testing laboratory and certified to hold for a defined length of time. An uncertified safe is burglar-deterrent, meaning built to slow an attack down, but never tested against a standard.

You can see it in the safes themselves. Steel thickness, lock quality and weight vary a great deal, which is why the prices in this category span so wide a range. The Burglary rating filter above the products separates the two groups.

For a private buyer this is about peace of mind, not about the insurance claim. Household contents are compensated as contents, and what you get back is governed by the terms of your policy rather than by which safe you chose. A certified safe is worth buying because it genuinely holds longer when somebody is standing in front of it with tools.

Do check your own policy even so. Cover for jewellery, watches and cash is usually capped, and the limits differ between insurers.

Before you order

Measure the space and compare it with the outer dimensions of the safe, not the internal ones. Make sure the wall or slab will carry the weight, and bear in mind that building into a load-bearing structure may require a permit or a qualified fitter. We supply the safe, not the installation.
