Should the contents be displayed or just visible?

A glass display cabinet shows off what is inside. Glass shelves let the light through so that even the lowest shelf is visible, and there are cabinets with glass in the sides as well and with built-in LED lighting. They suit shops, museums, churches and exhibitions.

A steel glass-door cabinet does the same for the office: binders and materials can be seen through the glass, so you can see what is where without opening the door. The cabinets with steel shelves hold A4 binders.

How strong is the glass?

The glass in the doors is toughened, and in several cabinets it is also laminated safety glass: layers of glass and plastic film that hold together if the pane breaks, instead of shattering into sharp shards.

For jewellery, watches and collectables there are glass display cabinets in 4 mm steel that are burglary-delaying and fire-insulated. They slow down a break-in and protect the contents better in a fire, but are not rated to any standard for burglary or fire.

A glass cabinet keeps curious hands away, but it does not replace a security-rated cabinet. If your insurer requires an approved cabinet for valuables, you need a safe (kassaskåp).

Key or code?

Most of the cabinets lock with a key, with two keys per lock. There are also cabinets with an electronic code lock, so that several members of staff can open them without keys being handed over.

Glass or steel shelves?

Glass shelves let the light reach the whole cabinet and suit contents that are on display. Steel shelves carry more and suit binders and heavier items. The shelves can be moved up or down to fit what will stand on them.

Some of the cabinets are made in Borås, Sweden, in fully welded steel, and tested to Swedish and European furniture standards for stability and strength.

Where will the cabinet stand?

The cabinets are floor-standing, and there are display cabinets on lockable castors that can be wheeled to where they are needed, for example at a trade fair or in a shop that is being rearranged.
