How a pallet rack goes together

A starter bay consists of two frames and a number of beams. The beams hook into the frame uprights and can be moved up or down, so you decide where each level sits and how tall the pallets between them may be.

Building a row does not need a whole bay each time. The next bay hooks into the previous frame and needs only one new frame plus beams. A row of five bays therefore needs six frames, not ten. That saves both floor space and money.

Bolts are not included with the frame. Add a frame kit, listed under Accessories in the filter. You will also find spacers there for setting frames away from a wall.

Load per level and load per section

These are two different figures and neither can be calculated from the other. The beam figure states what one level carries with the load evenly distributed. The frame figure states what the whole bay carries, and that limit is set by the uprights. A bay with four levels therefore does not carry four times the beam capacity.

Both are filterable, under Load per level and Load per section, and they are the same two figures that must appear on the rack's load notice.

Removing a beam can reduce what the level above will take. The upright then spans a longer unsupported distance and becomes weaker. If you rebuild the rack, update the notice.

What Swedish regulations require of your racking

Pallet racking is work equipment, and the employer is responsible for keeping it safe. That follows from the Swedish Work Environment Act (arbetsmiljölagen), and the regulations issued by the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) set specific requirements for how racking must be equipped:

  • Impact protection (påkörningsskydd) at exposed points such as corners and frame ends, wherever forklifts operate
  • Beam locking pins (balkspärrar) to stop beams lifting out when a load is taken down
  • A load notice (belastningsskylt) clearly stating the maximum load per bay and per level, placed where it is easily seen, for example on the frames
  • Pallet backstops (genomskjutningsskydd) where a pallet could be pushed through to the other side
  • Mesh or barriers (rasskydd) where goods could fall out over walkways and workplaces
  • Anchoring to the floor. Concrete carries more than asphalt, which affects both the fixing and the stability of the rack

Weak pallets, disposable ones for instance, should not sit directly on the beams. Place them on a EUR pallet or a support bar.

Annual inspection

Under SS-EN 15635, racking must be inspected by a trained inspector at least once a year, and the inspection must be documented. Between inspections, the person responsible for warehouse safety must ensure a visual check is carried out weekly, or at another interval justified by a risk assessment.

The standard also states two things that are easy to overlook: staff working in and around the racking must be told how to use it safely, and damage must be reported immediately to the person responsible for safety. Keep the assembly instructions; you will need them when the rack is rebuilt.

Load notices and labelling

The notice must be clearly visible and state the maximum load per bay and per level. A simple solution is a magnetic frame that attaches straight to the beam. It holds firmly, it is easy to read and it moves when the rack is rebuilt. Impact protection

The upright is the weakest point of a rack when a forklift hits it. An impact protector in front of the frame takes the blow instead of the upright, and it is considerably cheaper to replace. Used pallet racking

Galvanised steel racking lasts for decades, and buying used is often a good deal provided the parts are undamaged and the assembly instructions are still available. Stock varies, so have a look in the bargain basement.
