What do the rules require of a dynamite safe?

The Swedish civil defence agency (Myndigheten för civilt försvar, MCF), which has taken over from MSB, regulates storage in the regulations on handling explosive goods, MCFFS 2026:4. The theft protection required depends on how attractive the goods are to thieves.

Dynamite, detonators and detonating cord are classed as highly attractive to thieves. They must be stored with theft protection at least equivalent to a safe to EN 1143-1 Grade III, which should resist hand-held and power tools for at least 80 minutes.

Fire protection equivalent to EI 30

The store must also protect against fire from outside, equivalent to fire resistance class EI 30. According to MCF, a safe tested to NT Fire 017 meets the requirement if it lasts 30 minutes. The safes here are tested to NT Fire 017 and meet it with a margin. Choose in the Fire rating filter.

Dynamite and detonators in the same safe?

Detonators and other initiators may be stored together with the explosive if the total quantity is no more than 60 kg. The initiators must then be kept apart, so that an initiation cannot be transferred and the goods cannot be mixed up, usually in a separate compartment. Above 60 kg a separate store is needed for the initiators.

Anchor the safe

A store for blasting explosives weighing less than 500 kg must be anchored to the floor, a wall or the ground, or on a truck bed or in a container if it moves with the work. Removable lifting eyes should be taken off once the safe is in place.

How much may I store?

The quantity is set by your storage permit, not by the safe. The permit is based on the goods involved and the distance to homes and other protected objects. Above 500 kg in a store above ground, lightning protection is also required.

Fire-fighting equipment for small fires must be kept by the store, and the store must carry prohibition and warning signs. Several of the safes come with a fire extinguisher.

Dynamite safes for outdoor use

The outdoor safes are weatherproof and have a cover over the door, lifting eyes for transport and in some cases preparation for lightning protection. A movable store, for example at a road construction site, must be reported to the municipality where it is kept.

Gunpowder, ammunition and fireworks

Gunpowder and small-arms ammunition are attractive to thieves, but not highly so. For them a security cabinet to SSF 3492 is enough. Fireworks and distress flares require a padlock and fittings of class 2.
