Exclusive designer safes

Safes meant to be seen

A safe is usually something you hide. Grey, boxy, at the back of the wardrobe. The safes here are built for the opposite: to stand out in the room and bear looking at.

Two quite different things live in this category. Fire-resistant safes for the home in real colours, at about what a plain grey one costs. And handbuilt safes from Döttling and Boca do Lobo, where the safe is a piece of furniture that happens to be a safe.

And do feel free to just look. Most people who come to this page are not here to buy. They are here to see what is possible when nobody has to hold back, and to marvel at the price tags. That is entirely welcome. It is why the page exists.

Colour is not only a matter of looks

A safe that looks like a safe announces that there is something worth stealing in the house. A safe that looks like furniture does not.

That is no protection in itself - anyone determined to look will find it - but it is one of several small things that make a home less interesting. And it means the safe can stand in the living room rather than in the wardrobe, which in practice means it actually gets used.

The safes in colour

One half of the category is fire-resistant document safes in eight colours, at roughly the price of a plain grey one. They protect both paper and digital media for at least 60 minutes, which is more than most home safes manage.

So this is not aesthetics at the expense of function. The Fire rating filter shows what each one is tested against.

Döttling and Boca do Lobo

The other half is something else entirely. Döttling has been building safes in Germany since 1919, often to order, with interiors fitted to whatever is going in - watch collections with winders, jewellery drawers, whisky compartments.

The Focus Line 2 is the range you can see here: certified burglary protection to EN 1143-1, 60 minutes of fire protection, Alcantara inside and out, and a choice of chrome, ruthenium or 24 carat gold on the handle and lock. Other sizes, interiors and materials are made to order - ask us.

Boca do Lobo work just outside Porto, in Portugal, and make safes that would sit as comfortably in a museum. Handworked surfaces, precious metal, and a design language that makes no attempt to hide what the safe is. If you want to see their whole world, it is theirs to show: Boca do Lobo Private Collection.

Both makers work in small numbers and most models can be specified. Lead times follow from that - count in months, not days.

And no, this is not only a display cabinet. Both a Boca do Lobo Black Diamond and a Döttling have gone to a customer. It is rare, but it happens - and when it does it starts with a conversation, not with a buy button. Call us on +46 770 22 01 22.

What these safes actually protect against

It varies, and it is worth checking before buying on looks alone. Most of the safes here are theft-delaying and carry no rating, like the majority of home safes in our range.

Some of them are rated to EN 1143-1, at grade 0 and grade I - the Döttling Focus Line among them. If insurance cover has to follow the valuables, it is the rating that decides, not the price: an expensive safe is not automatically a rated one.

If you need the rating, the full selection is under high-security safes. Do call us - several of the designer safes can be had with a heavier lock case than standard.

Where is it going to stand?

Think that through before you choose, because these safes are made to be seen and the position matters differently. The Outer height in mm and Outer width in mm filters help once the spot is settled.

Think about the weight and the way in as well. A safe destined for an upper floor has to get there first, and the heavier models need somebody to plan the delivery. We help with that.
