Burglary protection safes

A burglary rated safe has been tested and certified by an independent third party, not simply built from thick steel. That is the difference between a cabinet that slows a break-in down and a cabinet your insurer will count on.

Three types are sold on the Swedish market, and they differ in what they are approved for:

  • Burglary-resistant cabinets, class S2 to EN 14450. The Swedish Theft Prevention Association recommends this class for valuables kept at home. Insurers normally allow cash up to around SEK 4,000. S2 cabinets are not intended for insured storage at a business.
  • Security cabinets certified to SSF 3492, previously SS 3492. According to the Swedish Theft Prevention Association, insurers normally accept jewellery, watches and other theft-prone property up to one price base amount. That is a figure set annually by the Swedish government, SEK 59,200 for 2026. What applies to your own policy is stated in your policy documents.
  • Grade-rated value safes to EN 1143-1. Here there is a fixed scale. Insurance Sweden's recommendation FTR 1028 gives SEK 50,000 for grade 0, 80,000 for grade I, 140,000 for grade II, 210,000 for grade III, 350,000 for grade IV, 550,000 for grade V, 830,000 for grade VI and 1,650,000 for grade VII.

Find the right safe with the filters

Use the filters above the products to narrow it down. Theft Rating shows which of the three standards the safe was tested against, and Fire Rating whether it also protects the contents against fire. You can filter on Outer Height (mm) and Outer Width (mm) if the safe has to fit a particular spot, on Lock Type, and on Boltable if it needs to be anchored to the floor or wall.

Not sure where to start? Work from what goes in the safe and what your insurer requires. For a home, an S2 cabinet is enough for most people. For a business holding insured valuables, start with the amount and pick the class from there.

The amounts above are recommendations, not rules. Your own policy always takes precedence, and the limit may be raised if the premises have an alarm. Ask your insurer before buying if your sum is close to a limit.
